The Power of an Attitude of Gratitude

My advisor, Akram Siddiqi, reminded me of the following powerful story at our last business meeting which I thought would be useful to share with you:

The Prophet Moses was on his way to the spot where he regularly spoke with the Almighty and on his way he met a very wealthy man who asked Moses to request that the Almighty not shower more wealth on him because he had too much already and could not use any more. Further along, Moses met a pauper wearing only a loin cloth….this pauper asked Moses to find out why the Almighty was ignoring him.

 Moses delivered both messages. The Almighty responded that if the rich man wanted to stop receiving more wealth, he should start being ungrateful and the pauper should start being grateful if he wanted to receive more.

 When Moses made this suggestion to the wealthy man he said “but how can I stop being grateful? The Almighty has bestowed so many blessings on me!”…”Now you know why your riches keep increasing” replied Moses.

 The poor man, on the other hand raised his arms up in anger when told that he needed to be more grateful. “What has He given me that I should be grateful!?” he shouted. At that point, the wind blew away the loin cloth he was wearing and left him naked! J
