Benchmarking / Modelling
In business, as in life in general, an excellent strategy to achieve
the standards you desire, is to “benchmark”……that is, look at the
company which is at the forefront in your industry and use their standards
to measure your own by. The most important task is for you to find
out HOW they have achieved those results. Like a good chemist, find
out their recipe for success, and follow the strategy as accurately
as if you were trying to duplicate a chemistry experiment. Companies
are inevitably relieved to be considered the “benchmarks” in their
field and will usually be very willing to describe at length what
they did to be so successful. Similarly, your role models….the people
you aspire to become like, will also be flattered to know that you
are considering modelling them (ie. imitating their behaviour)….at
a price they will sell you their recipe for success….if they are worth
modelling, pay them their price as it will save you years of going
round in circles making the same mistakes….you can always get your
money back but you can NEVER get your time back!
