The Culture of Business

When we go to places like Hawaii or India with money made in Europe and the North Americas, we can afford to live like millionaires. I know from personal experience that it is quite a different story for people trapped in low-paying jobs in both India and Hawaii.

One of my friends in Hawaii has a despondent teenage son who has dropped out of High School as the prospects of getting a good job are so low. Apparently, the best jobs are taken by highly motivated and skilled people from the US mainland, eager to live in Paradise. So the "get a good education which trains you for a good job" belief system is unconvincing and hard for teenagers to buy into. But what is the alternative?

Many people trapped in the impoverished lifestyles of jobs without inspiration or satisfaction attempt to escape by starting their own businesses. People with saleable skills start with self-employment and freelancing. The difference between a self-employed person and a business person is that the latter makes money by getting other people to do the work. A self-employed person sells their own time; a business person sells other people's time.

What is it about the culture of business that could help to revive a healthy spirit of survival in modern day teenagers whether they are in Hawaii, East London, India or Iraq?
