180404b Dealing with Change There was an old film on TV this week called “A Walk in the Clouds” and I was impressed by a scene towards the end of the film where a wine-makers’ vineyards got completely burnt down accidentally leaving the whole wine-making community fearful that that was the end of their livelihood and community. It reminded me of the coal-miner communities in Britain. In 1984, the year of the coal miners strike, I remember taking part in London demonstrations to express compassion and sympathy for the cause of the mining communities. However, 20 years later, I see things from a very different perspective. “If you do not change, you can become extinct” p46 “Who Moved my Cheese?” by Dr Spencer Johnson. In his very easy to read and enjoyable adventure story about a couple of mice and Littlepeople that learnt to “Move with the Cheese and Enjoy it!” , Dr Spencer illustrates the folly of our stubbornness in holding on to old beliefs that can leave us stuck in destructive, unproductive situations like coal-miners hanging on to pits that no longer make profit. In order to find fresh new opportunities, we have to “get on our bikes” and move in a different direction (south?) or have I become too much of a Thatcherite! J Freedom lies in embracing change….when we choose security over freedom and try to find it by hanging on to our past successes, we can be bitterly disappointed “has-beens” because they say that the only constant in life is change. So examine your beliefs that are keeping you in a state of stagnation in some area of your life. Do some spring cleaning (of your beliefs) and see what new empowering beliefs you can create for yourself to find new “cheese” in life… “Imagining yourself enjoying your new cheese leads you to it” p58 “Who Moved My Cheese?” So, what is the “new cheese” that you are looking for in life? |
