141203 The Power of Being Yourself When I asked the Ealing Trojans club to think of a famous leader, only 3 out of 22 people thought of a female leader in a very mixed cultural group of Londoners. I was not at all surprised as this is the most common response…whenever I ask my friends or groups of people to think of a leader, they inevitably come up with a male figure. What is the consequence of this? As we learn to be like the people we aspire to become, we tend to imitate their behaviour and adopt their attitudes. So if a woman aspires to be like her masculine role model, she will inevitably become more masculine …..it is also very fashionable for men to be “in touch with their feminine side”….the result of the modern approach is a lack of gender differentiation which is often encouraged in the name of “equality”…we make a false assumption that if men and women are to be equal, they must be the SAME. In mathematics, equal is NOT always the same….and the same is true in real life. There is a very high percentage of single people at the moment….my dear friend Heiko in Germany; another 60s child, (there are a LOT of single 60s children! J ) called yesterday to ponder over the question of why people like us are not living the lives we “should” be living (happily married, with homes and families of our own J )…or does that only happen in the Grimms fairy tales? Perhaps the answer lies in being more of who we really are rather than living the lives of our “role models” whether they are the princes and princesses of Grimms et al. or their equivalent executives, entrepreneurs and CEOs in the industrialised world J There are many similarities between the creation of kingdoms and the creation of enterprises….mergers, strategic alliances, takeovers and the ruthless “survival of the fittest” competition J…. |
