130903 The Power of Community Ever felt isolated and lonely without your family and community to support you when you moved home….especially if you moved to a new country? London is a very cosmopolitan city with thousands of communities, some of which are deeply rooted in shared culture, religion or a shared local environment (home, education and work)….many communities are built around shared interests, shared values or shared lifestyles and the stability of these is variable depending on the strength of the connecting factors holding them together. A large percentage of Londoners are temporary residents. Over the past 10 years, I have worked with people who have migrated to London from other parts of the UK and abroad and a common complaint is that the barriers to entry to established communities can result in an isolated city lifestyle when those most open to making new friendships move on so frequently. Wherever there is a complaint, there is a solution and my attitude is that if you find it too difficult to belong to an existing community, create one of your own! J It was in response to a client’s frustration about being lonely and isolated that I created the Ealing Friends community about two years ago. The concept of social networking on which Ealing Friends is based, wipes out most of the reasons I have been given about why people are victims of loneliness and isolation….it does not, however, address the issue of why people perpetuate their own loneliness which is also a concern. |
