The Hero's Journey of the Entrepreneur
When we stretch outside of our "normal" level of existence and aim for that extraordinary level of success that distinguishes us from the crowd, we place ourself on the mythical journey of the hero and heroine. Throughout history, we have accumulated tales of the enormous trials & tribulations that the hero-heroine needs to overcome before returning to their communities with added treasures of awareness, skills and boons.
Becoming a successful entrepreneur is very different from becoming a successful professional. In the latter there is a tried and tested formula for success whereas in the former, one has to tread the untrodden path and follow one's own "hero's journey". What does it take to survive the journey of becoming a successful entrepreneur or business person, without having to run back to the security of the safe professional job?
Well, you know it's a long story! But let's start with values. Along the way, one of the most trying tests that the hero entrepreneur will face is the testing of their values. You want to make money? At what cost? Over the past few weeks, I have been investigating the issues around "usury". Some of the leading philosophical, religious and economic thinkers believe that usury is the greatest social evil that causes international crimes such as poverty, terrorism, wars. Plato, Aristotle, Jesus, the Prophet Mohammed, the Buddha have all condemned usury and the remarkable thing is that most educated people nowadays don't even know what usury means without consulting their dictionaries! If you are on a "hero's journey" in creating a wealthy business, you might want to inform yourself about how you are entangling yourself, economically and politically and the following "worldpsychology" website lists a few "must read" articles to get you started: Wo rld Psychology.
